Consular services are provided in accordance with the principles of equality, impartiality, efficiency and transparency. The exercise of some rights and access to some services are limited only to Italians who have registered with the Registry of Italians Resident Abroad (AIRE), mandatory under Law no. 470 of 1988.
The diplomatic-consular delegations protect their fellow citizens in various circumstances. For example: violation of their fundamental rights and limitation or deprivation of their personal freedom, assistance in cases of emergency or in crisis situations, search for family members, issue of travel documents, succession files open abroad, repatriation of the bodies.
