From the political standpoint, Saudi Arabia and Italy share the commitment to contribute to stabilize the Middle East and the Gulf Region. The recent visits of the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs Franco Frattini and of the Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi have demonstrated that both countries believe in a “two-state solution” for the Israeli-Palestinian issue and are equally engaged in attempts to revive the Peace Process. Regarding the Iraqi situation the political efforts of both countries are aimed at achieving a strong and lasting peace. Both countries are deeply concerned about the situation on the Yemeni border and the worsening of the Afghan political situation. The countries cooperate on fighting international terrorism. With regard to the latter the actions of the Saudi government have proven effective in both preventing radicalization  and further militants’ recruitments. Italy also strongly supports the interfaith initiative promoted by King Abdullah.
